Mechanical filtration

This type of filtration is performed to rid the water from the ever present waste particles. Just by looking at dirty water you will notice that these particles come in different sizes and we want to filter them out in order from big to small. In order to achieve this, I use different kinds of material. Ceramic pipes for the large particles, medium filtration wads for medium sized particles and fine filtration wads for small particles.

Using fine filtration material at the beginning of the filtration process will quickly result in a clogged up filter so we start off with the ceramic pipes. You might ask yourself: ”What do these pipes actually do?” They don't look like they possess filtering capabilities as they have relatively large holes in them.

Well first of all when packed together, these ceramic pipes resemble the structure of a sponge inside the canister filter but because they have relatively large holes, they can hold a lot of dirt without clogging up. Secondly, the pipes cause the water to whirl and also provide an evenly dispersed flow of water through the next filtration material.

They also have bio filtering capabilities but there are better alternatives to take care of that part. I use them to filter out the large particles without clogging up the filter completely and I've to say I'm quite satisfied with a layer of 4 - 5 CM (about 1.5 - 2 inches) of ceramic pipes at the bottom of the canister filter.
